Anglican Diocese of Dunedin, New Zealand

Port Chalmers-Warrington Parish

Here you will find two warm, friendly congregations where people care for one another and are delighted to welcome all who come. Every individual matters to these people, from those who have been part of the place for over 80 years to the smallest baby. We have an especially relaxed attitude to children - our treasures.

Worship is centred round the Eucharist. This is a holy place, where we meet God - but it is also warm, inviting and relaxed. We know how to laugh. We are rooted in the past and have not forgotten our history, but we also live in the present, and enjoy contemporary music as well as old favourites. Each church has some good singers and a capable, reliable organist to lead the music. We make creative use of our New Zealand Prayer Book and have also revived the ancient Holy Week and Easter liturgies. There is considerable participation by the congregation [children as well as adults] in the services. This is co-ordinated by the 4 lay ministers, who cover a range of age, interests, talents, race and gender, but all have a deep sense of calling.

Our people have a strong concern for issues of social justice in the community and their Christian ministry leads them into a number of areas of service to others. Reaching out to children includes a school holiday programme in Warrington; and in Port Chalmers, an after-school programme at the major festivals of Christmas and Easter.

St Barnabas is on the Coast Road, going out of Warrington. It is set in a churchyard, where Archbishop Nevill, our first Bishop is buried, among the trees and shrubs, with glimpses of the Pacific Ocean. The church is well cared for, and is notable for its superb stained glass windows.
There is a weekly Sunday Eucharist at 11.30 a m.

Holy Trinity is on the east side of Port Chalmers on the corner of Grey and Scotia Streets. A stone church, it withstands the battering of wind and weather, serves the Port community and has the "Flying Angel" flag of the Missions to Seamen. Sea Sunday is important here.
Sunday Eucharist - 9.30 a m followed by morning tea
Wednesdays - 10 a m - also followed by morning tea.
