History of the Holy Trinity Church in Lawrence

Holy Trinity Church, Lawrence.

  • 1867 Anglican services were held in the Weslyan church or in the school.
  • 1868 The Vicarage was built. This was used until 1948, but is now a private residence.
  • 1870 The first Vicar was appointed.
  • 1871 The original Church was opened on 7 May. Bishop-elect Nevill presided.
  • 1872 Parochial District of Tuapeka established.
  • 1874 Rev John Dewe ordained priest in Holy Trinity. Said to be the first
    in the Diocese and the first at which Bishop Nevill presided.
  • 1882 Sunday School Hall was opened (This has recently been sold)
  • 1898 The small Pipe organ which is still in use was donated.
  • 1925 The present red brick Church was built and was consecrated by Bishop Richards, a former Vicar.
  • 1896 The bell tower was built. This was restored in 1982.


Holy Trinity's belfry

Font.
Story has it that it is made of Caen stone and taken from France to England at the time of the Norman Conquests. During Oliver Cromwell`s time it was discarded and used as a stock trough. Bishop Richards had it shipped to Dunedin for use at St Paul`s Cathedral.

St Matthew's Waitahuna. St Alban's Beaumont.
These have been sold and are now used as private residences.
1898 St Matthew's was opened.
1922 St Alban's was opened.
