St. Saviour's Mataura rented an unused shop for the day and invited everyone in the town to light a candle. The poster in the shop window said, "Come and light a candle for the mill and for your town.

We also gave a keg of beer to the paper mill social club on the day of the closing. Rev'd Bill Schroeder came to the club rooms to enjoy the company and wish the workers well as they went on to new things.
