Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd began in Rome in 1954.  It has evolved to its present form through careful observation of children's responses to material presented and the developmental needs of the child at particular sensitive periods, using the Montessori framework.

The Catechesis is a religious education which takes place in a prepared environment where the child and God are trusted to form their own relationship.  It is based on biblical and liturgical themes which are initially presented to the children by the catechist, who shares the relevant text with the children through proclamation and working with simple yet beautiful materials.  Once the presentation has been made the children are then able to work with the material and respond in their own way through prayer in the form of art, contemplation, song, silence and "work".  The emphasis is not teaching but serving and observing the children and wondering together.

St Michael and All Angels first offered this experience (initially to 3-6 year olds) in late 2009, to celebrate and contemplate Advent.
