St Mary the Virgin, Omakau

Omakau (pop. about 400), 20 minutes north-east from Alexandra or 40 minutes west from Ranfurly, is the centre for a widespread sheep-farming district. While there, cross the Manuherikia River to visit nearby, historic Ophir. St Mary's began life as St Peter's at Queenstown before being shifted in sections and re-erected in Omakau in 1933. It is a classic colonial timber building with transepts, the altar now at the center of the cross. A feature of worship is that the congregation regularly includes four generations of one family - the Sinnamons.

Find St Mary's on the main road toward the Alexandra end of town.

Scheduled Worship: 2nd and 4th Sundays of month, 11.00am.

Local Contact: Lionel & the  Rev'd Penny  Sinnamon, P.O.  Box  39 Omakau. Tel. / fax 03 477 3070.
