Overview: Dunstan-Teviot Anglicans in Mutual Ministry

This is a rugged, dry, beautiful region of 9000 square kilometres of the central heartland of Otago, in the South Island of Aotearoa-New Zealand. We enjoy lots of wonderful space: only about 8,000 people in total, and close to two-thirds of us live within 20km of Alexandra, the principal town. We produce some of the world's finest merino wool from our tussock high country and wonderfully tasty fruit (notably cherries and apricots) from our valleys. We are blessed with many retired folk, attracted by our climate, relaxed lifestyle and caring, fun-loving communities. Leisure opportunities include tramping, mountain-biking, four-wheel-drive trekking, skiing, skating, curling, trout fishing, golf and the full range of field sports.

Those who first walked this way were Maori on summer hunting expeditions. Pakeha (European) settlement began with a trickle of sheep-farmers followed by a rush of gold-miners from the 1860s. The Anglican expression of God's Church has always been few in number relative to Presbyterian and Roman Catholic, yet highly valued for its special gifts within the wider Christian family.

The Dunstan Pasrish is comprised of five small, widely scattered faith communities. We are working under the Mutual Ministry concept and are enjoying the opportunity to widen our vision and use our God-given gifts. We have employed a part-time Priest Enabler and the parish is well served by 4 non-stipendiary priests, a ministry team and two lay ministers in the Teviot valley. Administrator and contact person is Liz Duggan (03) 448-7435 or eaduggan@clear.net.nz
