Welcome to our pages. Here you will find,

Overview: Dunstan-Maniototo-Teviot Anglicans in Mutual Ministry

This is a rugged, dry, beautiful region of 9000 square kilometres of the central heartland of Otago, in the South Island of Aotearoa-New Zealand. We enjoy lots of wonderful space: only about 10,000 people in total, and close to two-thirds of us live within 20km of Alexandra, the principal town. We produce some of the world's finest merino wool from our tussock high country and wonderfully tasty fruit (notably cherries and apricots) from our valleys. We are blessed with many retired folk, attracted by our climate, relaxed lifestyle and caring, fun-loving communities. Leisure opportunities include tramping, mountain-biking, four-wheel-drive trekking, skiing, skating, curling, trout fishing, golf and the full range of field sports.

Those who first walked this way were Maori on summer hunting expeditions. Pakeha (European) settlement began with a trickle of sheep-farmers followed by a rush of gold-miners from the 1860s. The Anglican expression of God's Church has always been few in number relative to Presbyterian and Roman Catholic, yet highly valued for its special gifts within the wider Christian family.

We work as a partnership between two parishes- Dunstan, with a full-time parish priest, and Maniototo, dependent on visiting ministers since 1982; a network of eight small, widely scattered (the furthest flung over 160km apart) faith communities. They are linked by the ministry of one stipended priest who serves as educator, encourager and filler of gaps in the ministry of the local baptised. Other key people include eight licensed by our bishop for local ministry - two of them priests raised up by their faith communities, the others lay folk. Our embracing of the mutual (a.k.a. total, baptismal, local, etc.) approach to ministry is an evolving thing. It's not mostly about cash budgets. Mostly, it's about each local church becoming equipped with vision, gifts and energy to seed its whole local context of land-inclusive community with gospel. We are open, we are learning, and we are unashamed of the fact that we often struggle to move into the new while honouring those faithful who have earned the right to be loved to death.

Retreats: We offer accommodation and light direction for individuals and small groups
